Mega Scrimmage Brings H2 Champions, Parents & Fans out in Huge Numbers!

More than 180 athletes took part in the Fourth Annual H2 Mega Scrimmage, at Whitfield High School!  “It was a great way to help showcase 19 teams in an inter-club 56 game affair,” according to Geoff Davis, club director of H2 Saint Louis.

Teams competed in a friendly manner while helping the coaches develop strategies and work with lineups for their upcoming tournament season which begins next weekend.  It also provided each member the opportunity to complete the practical portion of the Referee and Scorekeepers clinic required by Gateway.

Our host, the H2 Saint Louis 18 Black squad and their parents did a fabulous job providing wonderful food options.

As we look towards the future with our mission in mind, Success in Life through Volleyball, H2 Saint Louis will celebrate its Fifth Annual H2 Mega Scrimmage next season by pledging monies raised to benefit the Susan G. Koman Foundation to fight Breast Cancer.

Former Kansas University Volleyball Standout Joins H2 Coaching Staff

St. Louis, Mo. – H2 Saint Louis Club Director, Geoff Davis, announced today that former Kansas University Volleyball standout Donna (Abeln) Nabors ( 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 ) has joined the H2 coaching staff.  “We are ecstatic that Donna will be working with our 14s for the 2010-2011 campaign.  Her D1 collegiate experience and years of club coaching experience is ideal for our program where we help athletes develop the sound fundamentals at a young age as they prepare to enter high school,” Davis stated.

“The decision to be a part of H2 this year was easy when I saw all the positive, motivated and committed people the organization is attracting” stated Nabors.

“We have had overwhelming success with our 14s program.   Since our beginning, 90% of the kids in our program have made their Varsity and JV programs as freshman, including 5 girls currently playing on Incarnate Word Academy’s 2010 JV squad and 5 playing for Trinity High School.  We look forward to Donna helping improve on this record over the years to come.  Not to mention that she’s a Jayhawk!,” Davis continued.

We are still looking for some strong talent to shore up our 13s program this season.  I am confident that we will find the right person to help our kids make a strong impact!

H2′s Davis helps give sport a lift in area

Fledgling program has blossomed in a hurry

BY MIKE ELDER
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 3:13 PM CDT

It’s hard to go to any prep or select volleyball tournaments in the St. Louis area these days and not see H2 Volleyball Club director/coach Geoff Davis being hit by an errant spike or two.

“I’m out there,” said Davis.

The 49-year-old Calverton Park resident, who is the founder of the three-year-old club which is stationed in North County, is one of the most dedicated club leaders I’ve come across. As a parent of a young volleyball junkie who played for a different organization this year, I’ve seen Davis at many a game and have respected what he’s done with his young club as well as how he conducts himself.

“Someone told me the other day that it might be the 70th high school tournament I’d been at (this year),” Davis told me after I introduced myself to him at the St. Joseph’s Academy Junior Varsity Tournament this past weekend and later was interviewing him. “I try to make sure I get to a game of each and every girl who played for me. I think it’s important that I show a commitment to their success.”

On the day I met him at St. Joe’s, Davis was again checking out some of his players. He was also looking for future players for his club, which has blossomed in the short time of its existence. This time out, Rosati-Kain 6-foot-3 freshman middle blocker Shayo Oginni, who is playing volleyball for the first time this fall, caught his eye.

“That would be nice,” he said when I asked him if he’d like to sign the North County youngster up for his club. “She’s the type of person who I think would develop very fast if I actually got her in the program, insulated her and allowed her to learn the skills she needs at her pace.”

Davis coached for the Hazelwood Hitters Volleyball Club for a year before taking his team and starting this new club. He had five teams his first season but soon he hopes to have as many as 10 teams from 13 to 17 years of age.

Davis is a current assistant coach for Washington University who also coached at John Burroughs High School for a number of years. He got involved in the game to help his daughter, Ashleigh, who is now out of college, to succeed in the sport, To that end, he left few stones unturned en route to learning the game.

“That experience and exposure helped form the basis of how I run H2 volleyball,” Davis said. “I’ve got kids coming from as far as Farmington to be part of what we’re doing. It’s pretty cool.”

The program’s teams, which have produced players now competing at Rosati, Trinity and Incarnate Word Academy as well as other area schools, practice at different facilities around the North County area. However, Davis said he’s trying to make the North County Recreation Complex the club’s official home.

“I’m trying to work through some things with the folks out there,” he said. “I’ve made a commitment to try to reinvigorate volleyball in North County and I hope they’ll be part of that.”

Any area players interested in playing competitive volleyball can find out more about the H2 club at WWW.H2VBC.ORG.

Lisa Orlet Joins H2 Saint Louis Volleyball for the 2010-2011 Season!

St. Louis, Mo. — H2 Saint Louis volleyball, Club Director, Geoff Davis announced today that Lisa Orlet, one of the most celebrated names in women’s volleyball locally, if not nationally, has joined the coaching staff as director of coach development for the 2010 – 2011 season.

Orlet, will not coach a specific team this season but will serve as a guidepost to help the coaches understand all the dimensions of the game and the development of a team.

“In less than 5 years of existence, H2s program has grown to over 120 athletes and its commitment to player development has had incredible results.  This season nine (9) of our athletes are competing for the Incarnate Word Academy volleyball program. This is an amazing statistic when you think that many of the ‘Elite Athletes’ have bypassed H2’s tryouts in pursuit of other coveted prize names in JO volleyball,” states Orlet.  Davis says that “Over 80% of the players in our program have made their High School Varsity or JV teams as Freshman”.

“I love seeing the kind of opportunities that can be created for kids when you get a passionate group of people who commit to making a difference in the lives of others.

I think that is a goal that we can all seek to fulfill in our time here, and I think Lisa will help our entire staff here experience that,” according to Davis.

“I am as excited about Lisa being a part of H2 as I was standing on the sideline as an assistant coach when the Wash U Bears won the DIV III National Championship in 2007 and again in 2009.  These are the moments you live for… luck does indeed favor the committed and the well prepared,” Davis states.

Following an esteemed career at the University of Kansas, Orlet guided the Incarnate Word Red Knights to the Missouri Class 4A state title in 2003, 2004 and 2005 while also posting top-four finishes in 2002 and 2007.

Individually, Orlet has also received numerous accolades. In 2004, she was awarded an ESPY for Best Local High School Coach (for all sports in St. Louis). Orlet earned Coach of the Year honors from 2003 to 2005 and received the 2005 Peggy Johnson Award for excellence in coaching.

She currently serves as Head Volleyball Coach at Althoff Catholic High School.

H2 seeks to complete its coaching roster with additions to the 12u and 13u levels in early October.

Washington University in St. Louis Coach Joins H2 Saint Louis!

St. Louis, Mo. — Jim Hunstein, assistant coach for the 2009 Div III National Champion Wash U Bears Volleyball Team, joins H2 Saint Louis as master coach.  Geoff Davis, H2 Saint Louis club director made the announcement.
In his new role, Hunstein will be given the creative reins to help guide the younger coaches in H2’s “feet first” philosophy of developing athletes at a young age, which is critical in all the high level athletes that ultimately compete for top level clubs and collegiate teams.

“We are ecstatic about the level of skill and coaching ability that Jim brings to the organization. With over 20 years of playing and coaching experience at all levels, Jim will be a real asset in the development of our entire coaching philosophy and direction and we could not be happier,” said Davis.

“I really like the direction the club is going and the energy created to power it.  This club offers opportunities that are geared to provide long term development for all their kids. I’m excited to be a part of it,” stated Hunstein.

“After winning a national championship with Wash U last season as an assistant coach, you can really see what championship athletes are capable of given the right environment to develop and grow, and I would love to help make that happen here at H2 Saint Louis for a group of girls whether USAV or AAUs,” said Hunstein.
