H2 Cardinal had an amazing weekend of play. The girls showed teamwork and motivation to strive for success. Saturday, April 1, 2017, H2 Cardinal competed in an 8 team tournament at Principia College. In pool play, they competed against Serves-U-Right. We were down in the first set by 10 points to come back with great serving by Jena Holder. She served 13 in a row with 4 aces to win 19-13. It was a hard team to get momentum going since they would hit first ball back over net, but H2 Cardinal took second set 19-17.

Second match against Springfield Shock and girls split 19-11, 16-19. Going into 3rd pool play match, girls needed to take two in order to not have a 3 way tie for first and decision to go to points. The girls came out strong against Festus Fire Black winning definitely on first set 19-8. They battled back and forth second set to eventually take victory 24-22 and advancing to gold playoffs.

Playoffs began with facing Team Momentum 11 Navy. Serving was consistent and strong first set with Hanna Matarelli, Jena Holder, and Sara Gouy scoring 4-6 points each to take victory 19-12. The second set, we couldn’t get momentum going and fell 12-19. However, the girls battled back with again strong serving from Jena Holder, Grace Malawy and Mackenzie Heberer to win decisively 15-6.
H2 Cardinal moved onto championship match vs. STL Crossfire. Though we had strong serving, we had 4 missed serves which in the end hurt us losing 17-19. The girls wanted gold badly and fired up with power serving from Ashlyn Hauk and aggressive play on the court by Morgan Hogue to win 19-12. Decisive match, the girls took over starting again with strong serving from Sara Gouy gaining a 6-0 lead. The girls kept in the game with tough plays out of the net by Julia Melosci, Mackenzie Heberer and Jena Holder to scramble to take 3rd ball over to go ahead 14-7. The girls didn’t let gamepoint go with out a fight and won 15-7.
The whole team team was present consisting of: Zoe Byron, Chase Chrenka, Sydney Davis, Sara Gouy, Ashlyn Hauk, Mackenzie Heberer, Morgan Hogue, Jena Holder, Megan Knobeloch, Grace Malawy, Hanna Matarelli, and Julia Melosci. They all contributed that day to take home first place gold. Amazing!

The next day, April 2, girls competed in 8 team pool at Bishop DuBourg High School. They won first 2 matches in pool play. First match against Rockwood 11 Black and winning 19-6, with 15 in a row serving by Zoe Byron. Came again strong to win 19-9 with Chase Chrenka going 4/4 serving. Next pool play against Pioner VBC winning first set 19-1 with great setting by Grace Malawy and by serving powers of Hanna Matarelli and Zoe Byron finishing the match. Second set victory 19-6 with strong hitting by Sydney Davis. Third pool play match against Gemini Crush was a back and forth battle. Girls couldn’t find their rhythm in first match losing 14-19. Second match, they came out more determined with nice passing by Megan Knobeloch and strong fight to win 20-18. We split the match and ended 5:1 in pool play. Unfortunately, Gemini scored 3 more points then us to take first in pool play. Going into gold playoff bracket, we played against a top ranked team of Gemini Stars. The girls put in all their might, but Gemini Stars were too tough that day and we lost 7-19, 10-19.
Two tournaments in back to back play, and our girls showed endurance and integrity. So proud of their weekend play and team spirit!
